<image:caption>“My husband was in Austria visiting our son, when the police came here. There were about seventy, kicking the doors, chasing around my mentally handicapped son. They asked ‘Where is your husband?’ My husband has a permit for a gun; I brought the gun and one policeman hit me hard in the face. I fell to the ground and was unconscious for three hours. Later I was told that everyone was screaming, my two boys were beaten in the yards and were left with bleeding hands. When my family said they must send me to hospital, the police said ‘Its’ nothing if an Albanian dies.’ Now I have hypertension and at night I have nightmares of my sons being beaten. The police thought they’d killed me so they didn’t stay more than an hour.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“We used to live in a village forty kilometres from here in the mountains, where there were wolves and wild animals. So when the police came here looking for arms, we gave them our two hunting guns. Here in our house nobody was beaten but a woman was beaten a hundred metres from here – we saw her carried out on a stretcher. Maybe they didn’t beat us because we gave up the guns, I don’t know why. We had eight police searching in this room but there was no maltreatment. But we are in a very dangerous situation; we are always frightened when we go outdoors.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Homes & Gardens (1996)</image:title>
<image:caption>“Early one morning at five minutes to six, someone knocked at my door and we saw a policeman trying to get in. I told my husband to run away, opened the door and about thirty policemen came into the yard. Then five of them surrounded me. One of them hit me, while the others asked about my husband and were waiting to hit me with their machine guns… My children got frightened and went to another room; there were five in one bed and one in another one. They were all sweaty from fear and didn’t move at all for two hours. The police searched everywhere looking for my husband and then left. Immediately I made the beds thinking that they had really gone. I got my little two-year-old daughter and changed her nappies, when suddenly they came back and three of them came in. They started searching all over again and they were swearing and shouting at me…”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“They met me in the field outside the house … straight away one of them grabbed me around the neck and the other one kicked me, so I fell. About six or seven policemen kicked me continuously. They stopped when they thought it was enough and took me to the garden. There, another ten to fifteen of them started to beat me up. They hit me with anything they could. When they finished beating me I was taken out by the wall. One of them was pointing a machine gun at me while the other one took a packet of cigarettes from my pocket. Another one got out some bullets and said that he would put them in my mouth instead of cigarettes… When I got in the house, everything was broken and my 67 year old father was beaten almost to death. He was hit on the head with a truncheon and in the back with guns. My father died less than a year after this. He was very disturbed after what happened and never recovered”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“We have a lot of problems on our way to school. We are frightened of being stopped by the police and anytime we see them we are afraid. But we carry on coming to school because we know that the school is the most important thing and we have to study and not be assimilated… …Once when I was with a friend we were stopped by the police on our way home; they asked us for ID. My friend actually didn’t have the ID on him, he left it at home. They took him to the police station and the next thing I knew he was in the hospital the day after that. He was really tortured, I don’t know how they did that but he was telling me that he was beaten by the police and the only thing he knew was when they hit him last on the back of the head.”</image:caption>

The bullets got me” … When the police found out that he was dead, they started singing Serbian nationalistic songs and congratulating each other … the house was completely on fire … I covered his face with a handkerchief … afterwards the police came and started to kick his dead body. Then they started to beat me up for not making my father surrender while he was alive. “His dead body is of no use to us”, they were saying loudly to each other. “We’ll kill all Kosovars as we killed her father.”</image:caption>

One of them pointed a pistol at my eye and threatened he was going to kill me … all this torture lasted from about 6.00pm to 11.00pm … the next morning I was taken to another room where they turned on the electric saw and threatened to cut off my head, unless I told them about my friends and their activities…It has already been a year of my insecurity here, and as I have got a wife and three children I have nowhere to go. So I stay at home and every day I expect them to come back …”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I brought some family photographs with me, a little blue skirt my grandmother made for me when I was a year old with ‘Edita’ embroidered on it in red, and the first shirt my eldest brother wore when he was born. My grandmother died last year. This is her last cigarette – she only smoked half of it, and I keep that with me. Every night I look at these things, and I feel my grandmother protecting me.” Edita, Neprosteno camp, Macedonia, 13 June 1999.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“…We walked to the border, with police and paramilitaries constantly threatening to shoot us. Sometimes my brother carried my mother in a blanket; sometimes I supporter her on one arm while I carried a twenty-kologram bag with the other. I could hardly walk. My brother is sick, and my father died nineteen years ago. I have to do both the women’s work and the men’s work of the family. My mother is my closest friend…” Myrvete. “…My daughter Myrvete has always looked after me. On the journey here, she was crying all the time about me. I kept saying, “It’s nothing, I’m all right,” but she wouldn’t stop crying. I had no food for four days and I thought I would die, but I worried so much about my children, it kept me alive…” Myrvete, age 35 and Pashije, age 75, Neprosteno camp, Macedonia, May 6 and June 16 1999.</image:caption>

<image:caption>. “I kept my hat from Kosova, and I will never let anyone take it from me. The Serbian police used to say, ‘what do you need this hat for?’ I didn’t let them take it. It’s our traditional Albanian hat and the Serbs don’t like it. They would order me, ‘Take off your hat.’ They wanted to throw it in the fields. I was hit by the Serbian police four or five times because of my hat. They can kill me, but I won’t take my hat off. I sit all day and long for my village. All I want is to go back to Kosova. It’s all I want. I want to be there.” Ramadan, age 73 Neprosteno camp, Macedonia, June 10 1999</image:caption>

So when I went to Tetovë on my visit out of the camp, I bought it, I wanted to make myself feel better. I’m a classical singer, but I had to leave all my music behind. We had to leave the family violin, our books, all our family photos. I like choral music and sonatas – Bach, Schumann, Chopin, but Mozart’s my favourite. I would like to sing in the camp, but there’s no privacy.” Mimoza, age 20 Neprosteno camp, Macedonia, 11 May 1999</image:caption>

I cook and clean all day, wash clothes as often as possible – it keeps me calm. Before we fled Kosova, our son Arben, who’s fifteen, was so scared of the Serbs he had to take tranquilizers. The internationals helped them. I came out of my house to see whatever was left of my son – but there was nothing to be seen but bags… We buried his bones in the village. My son Nexhat was only twenty-two years old.. he was our son, a son, and we will never see him again…Let’s go, we have to go up there, it’s pretty far, up by those tall tress. <image:caption>After the interview M.B., Bosniak, in a Prizren cafe, October 19 2000. ”Fear was our permanent escort from early 1998. The Albanians were the main focus of harassment, but we didn’t talk to them much; they didn’t trust us – each community had kept fairly separate for the last ten years. I had some Albanian acquaintances, but my closest friends were Bosniak. We met in both Serb and Albanian cafés,, but we weren’t trusted by either side. The last Bosniak café closed in April 2000 – we were worried that Albanian groups might throw grenades through the window. Before the war, it was the Serbs who broke the windows of the cafés; after the war, it was the Albanians. So for the last few months we’ve been to mostly Albanian cafés… We Bosniaks will always be in the minority. With each new regime, we face new hardships. We are like Sisyphus in the Greek myth, pushing the stone up the mountain in vain.”</image:caption>

That night I thought I will never be able to come home again, I will never see my husband again, no one will survive this war. On 14 June we were back, and as we came through the front gate, everything smelled of ash and human shit… The Serbs had stolen our cutlery and crockery, even the teaspoons. They’d used knives on the furniture, shat and peed on our family photos and on our clothes … They’d scrawled Serbian crosses, crude sexual drawings, and graffiti on the walls: ‘Serbia to Tokyo’, ‘We will rape you’, ‘If you come back here we will eat you,’ ‘We will massacre you.’ I felt like dying. It’s unbelievable what human beings can do …”. Miradije, Prishtina, 30 September 1999</image:caption>

There have been many wars between us, and both before and after the wars, we would sit together and eat together. <image:caption>Fi with Dominic, Weymouth, 1988. From Mothers’ Pride, © Melanie Friend. Fi, 18, lives on her own in a council flat in Weymouth with her nine-month old son, Dominic. “My friends have just stopped coming round, they just don’t seem to think I’m me anymore. I’m not a part of anything anymore because I’m a mother. I can’t do one damn thing that I want to do, I feel like I’m stuck inside somebody else’s body. I’m the last person in the world that should ever have attempted to be a mother. It was my mistake, I knew what I was doing just the same as the baby’s father did. I didn’t think I was capable of getting pregnant, I’d got away with it before, I just never ever got pregnant. I just couldn’t have an abortion, and I’d never have forgiven myself if he’d been adopted at birth. Mother had me adopted and I know what it feels like, I couldn’t inflict that on somebody else. … Dominic just demands all the time, demands to be fed, demands to be changed, demands to be talked to. I can’t read a book because he knows I’m not paying attention to him. I’m never going to be away from it. Alright, I know he’ll be going to school and everything but he’s going to be there for ever, it’s going to be a life sentence.” A few weeks later, Fi wrote Melanie a letter about the way she felt then. The following is an extract: “It still all gets me down and does my head in, but I’ve realised I’ve got to make some effort to change. I’ve got to make it easier for myself, because nobody else is going to do it for me. Also, I’ve got to stop blaming the baby. It’s unfair to resent him when he’s only the product of my own stupidity. I’ve got to start giving him what I owe him. I undertook the responsibility of caring for him, so I’ve got to do it. I started out with a bad attitude. I thought I could carry on with my life, just having Dominic on the side, but that was very selfish and naïve. I’ve got to forget most of what I want and give him what he wants. I’m still very angry towards my family for their lack of support and concern … but I can’t allow that to ruin the relationship between me and my baby. Anger is too destructive.” Fi, 19 May 1988 Text copyright for all Mothers’ Pride interviews © Melanie Friend & all contributors.</image:caption>

Extracts from the 1988 exhibition text panel: Jayne, 18, lives with her husband Buford and 15 month-old Jazz in a rented house on the outskirts of Weymouth. “Buford and I thought ‘if it happened, it happened’, we’d cross that bridge when we came to it … When the time came, I had what the doctors call a ‘textbook delivery’. But when she was three days old, Jazz had a heart murmur and the elderly doctor just said: ‘Your baby’s got a hole in the heart’ and walked off. It was really worrying, but she’s fine now. In the hospital the young nurses were OK about me being a ‘Miss’ but the older nurses were definitely disapproving. … When Jazz starts school, I’ll start work. Until then there’s a playgroup, but there’s no nursery space, and child minding is expensive. I’ll then go to night school or college and get some career working with my hands, something artistic like screen printing, or a job in a museum. … At the moment, there’s no money for babysitting so we can’t afford to both go out at the same time. But next weekend my mother’s going to look after Jazz, and Buford and I are going to a Rockabilly concert.” Jayne, 10 March 1988 Note: Text copyright for all Mothers’ Pride interviews © Melanie Friend & all contributors.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jeana with her 18-month old son, Southwark 1988. From Mothers’ Pride, © Melanie Friend. Extracts from the 1988 exhibition text panel: Jeana, 21, lives in a council block in Southwark with her 18-month-old son. “… The labour lasted five minutes, it was five minutes from the time I felt his head to the time his whole body and afterbirth were out. I wrapped him in a towel, flung my afterbirth in a bag (it was a Sainsbury's carrier bag) and heard him cry straight away. I remember seeing navy blue eyes and hearing him cry, and the dog wimpering in sympathy, and that was it. I was in the paper. Later I went on the area mobility scheme, and because of the baby's health and the damp in the previous place, I got this council flat. It's easier to live alone, no-one gets hurt that way. I don't talk to many people, and I don't trust anyone. Being a single mother, people snub you, and they'll look at you and think 'that's all they're fit for, having kids.' Sometimes they instantly look at your hands to see if you've got a wedding ring on. I just shut it all out, I refuse to let it affect me. Even my family sometimes say why didn't I get married. But I didn't want to know. I'm not willing to take that chance, get in a relationship and get married, because I see marriage as being strung up for life. I've worked since I left school, in nurseries and old people's homes, and now I want to earn my own money again and know where I am. I want to know my money's coming in every week, that I'm earning it and that everything's mine, I don't want a state handout. What I want is total independence, financial, everything, but you can't have total independence, can you? You've always got to have someone above you. When I was younger, I was always on my own, in my own world. I enjoy being a mother because I can give my child all the things that I never had, and then it's a new experience for both of us. I can learn more, I learn as I go along. I'm like having a new childhood."
